Savannah, Georgia has so much to offer and is the perfect little vacation spot for everyone. The city is overflowing with history and charm that no matter who you are you will find something you love about this gorgeous place. Just walking under the large oak trees dripping with Spanish moss will make you feel at ease. It’s easy to explore on foot or by car, just remember to watch out for that heat when packing your bags. You will instantly feel the humidity in the summer months so wear light breathable clothing and some comfortable shoes.

Things to do

Along River Street you will find some great local shops, and restaurants galore along a cobblestone street that glides along the channel. Take a moment to watch the many cargo ships pass through the channel or admire the statues among other works of art along the way. The WWII monument known as “The Cracked Earth” represents the world divided. “Waving Girl” is in remembrance of Florence Martus who would greet every passing ship with a wave of her handkerchief. The African American Monument portrays a family embracing with chains around their feet in remembrance of those who were enslaved. History is all over this beautiful city as long as you’re willing to look and learn. The grid of the city itself has a historical significance along with almost every building you see.

Tours

If you’re looking for the best way to tour the city and get all the history you can take then the “hop on, hop off” tour bus is the way to go. You can even get discount prices at some of the museum stops along the way. The drivers of the buses will share the history of Savannah as you ride through the city, dropping you off at multiple locations including historical homes, museums, churches, parks, and so much more. If you’re a fan of the Girl Scouts of America you may want to explore the birthplace of where it all got started. Juliette Gordon Low founded the Girl Scouts in Savannah and you can learn more about how it all got started. There’s so much history in Savannah you could fill a week just touring and exploring it all.

Beach

If you want to get away from the city and experience something different, Tybee Island is a short drive away. Take a day or two on the beach to relax and dip your toes in the water. The humidity will get you before the sun does so stay hydrated, especially when visiting in the summer. Some good eats should take your mind off all the heat so check out some of my favorite places to go below.

Eats + Treats

Two Cracked Eggs Cafe

You can’t go to the south without indulging in a good southern biscuit, and Two Cracked Eggs Cafe has the biggest and best biscuits around. Get a biscuit the size of your face and load it up with gravy, sausage, bacon, or their sensational homemade jelly. You can have it all with just one giant biscuit. I make biscuits all the time and I still don’t know how they do it. My mouth waters every time I think about them!

Vinnie Van Go-Go’s

Vinnie Van Go-Go’s is a must for all pizza lovers. Get giant New York style slices just the way you want them and let the cheesy goodness take over. Located at one of the many hop on, hop off bus stops makes it the perfect spot to grab some lunch amid all your busy touring around. The market is usually bustling with vendors, music, and shoppers so take some time to take it all in.

Leopold’s Ice Cream

Leopold’s Ice Cream has been doing ice cream right since 1919 when three brothers from Greece decided to open this ice cream parlor. You’ll know you’re in the right place when you see a line stretching out the door with those waiting to get a delectable treat. The old fashioned soda shop will take you back in time as soda jerks busily create your masterpiece. On a sultry summer day this is definitely the place to be.

End of the Road

Savannah is a great little romantic getaway that I will be visiting again. Just walking down the streets makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. The Spanish moss flowing in the trees has a calming effect that makes you want to open a good book. Savannah has even more to explore not mentioned here that I’ve yet to discover. My last trip left me wanting to visit again soon and I think your next visit will too!

If you enjoy little getaway trips like this you will want to head over to Arizona. There are many places that beckon love birds, friends, and family to visit.
