Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest

Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest is a short 20 minute drive from downtown Bardstown, Kentucky. With 40 miles of trails and almost 100 years of hospitality, Bernheim is a wonderful place to connect with nature. From its inception, the goal of Bernheim has been to connect people with nature. They reach that mission by intersecting the arts with nature, having a 17 acre natural playground, hosting endangered plant species, and working on lowering their carbon foot print.

This beautiful oasis, tucked between Louisville and Bardstown, Kentucky, is a must visit. The trails are all very well maintained, there are several bodies of water with plenty of wildlife, and they even have forest giants (as well as other art installations) throughout their trails. We took our little boy to see the Forest Giants, and he loved spotting turtles in the lake along the way. This particular trail (aptly named Forest Giant Trail) is an easy hike for families, and even stroller-friendly, making it a perfect outing with kids.

Shopping in Bardstown, Kentucky

Various glass hummingbird feeders hanging in a shop that are shaped similarly to antique lamps and come in various colors. They're located at the Artists Barrel in Bardstown, Kentucky.

Artists Barrel

Along the main drag of downtown Bardstown you will find many locally owned shops. I loved the Artists Barrel because it was full of locally hand crafted items. I found several Christmas and birthday gifts here. This is the type of place where you find those one of a kind items that you didn’t know you needed until you see it.

Trope Romance Book Shop

Tucked away from the hustle and bustle is Trope Romance Book Shop. A cute little shop that you will find near the farmers market. Full of romance novels to satisfy every type of reader. Grab a bag, a sticker, and a bookmark to start your next romance novel journey.

History

Museum Row

Along museum row in Bardstown, Kentucky are three wonderful museums, the Civil War Museum, Women’s Museum of the Civil War, and Colonial Village. These are fantastic museums full of artifacts from the Civil War era including a submarine, several cannons, uniforms from various regiments, artillery, and so much more. I especially loved reading the stories of the brave women who faced adversity and still did their part to help the causes they believed in. At only $15 per person (with senior, military, and child discounts) you can’t beat the amount of history you get to see. Your ticket is good for all museums for two days. These are the largest and most comprehensive museums that center on the Western Theater of the American Civil War so take your history lovers with you.

We really enjoyed exploring the Colonial Village, a collection of 10 original buildings dating as far back as the 1770s that have been carefully preserved and relocated to their current home as part of the museum. I had never stepped inside a tavern from that era before, so it was fascinating to see one in person. Each building had its own purpose and was decorated to reflect its original use, adding to the charm. Our two-year-old especially loved wandering through the village—it gave him a chance to stretch his legs and explore after an hour in the museum, which was the perfect break before heading into the next one.

My Old Kentucky Home State Park

Tour the antebellum home that inspired Stephen Foster’s “My Old Kentucky Home,” where costumed guides bring the history of the era to life. Beyond the home, the park offers a golf course, tennis courts, and campsites, making it a well-rounded destination. I once attended a wedding here, and it was absolutely beautiful—so if you’re looking for a memorable spot for your big day, this venue is well worth considering. While you are here you should catch a show, especially The Stephen Foster Story at the outdoor amphitheater. My Old Kentucky Home State Park should be at the top of your Bardstown, Kentucky to do list.

The Old Talbot Tavern in Bardstown, Kentucky it's a tan stone flat front structure with dark red shutters sitting right in the middle of downtown.

Old Talbot Tavern

Since 1779 this inn has housed and fed many travelers. As one of the oldest buildings in Bardstown Old Talbot Tavern should definitely be one of the places you visit. Make a reservation at the tavern or even spend the night, just as Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, Jesse James, and many other figures from the history books once did.

Eats + Treats

Donuts in a box from Hadorn's Bakery in Bardstown, Kentucky. There are two plain glazed, one chocolate glazed and a yum yum which is a braided donut with white and milk chocolate drizzle on top and cinnamon swirled inside.

Hadorn’s Bakery

Grab a donut or a dozen from Hadorn’s Bakery along with some other sweet treats. We got a yum yum, which is a braided donut with cinnamon swirled in the middle with milk and white chocolate drizzle on top. The texture is pillowy soft but also cake-like at the same time. In my opinion it was perfect!

Hurst Drug Store Soda Fountain and Gifts

For over 100 years Hurst Drug Store Soda Fountain and Gifts has stood at the heart of downtown Bardstown, Kentucky. The soda fountain serves up classic breakfast and lunch favorites, and you can’t go wrong with a sandwich or one of their juicy burgers. Pair it with an old-fashioned milkshake or sundae for the full experience—I tried the brownie sundae with hot fudge, and it was hands down the best I’ve ever had. While waiting for our food, we browsed the adjoining drug store and gift shop, which features everything from Willow figurines and children’s toys to wind chimes and greeting cards. A visit to Hurst Drug Store is a treat in every way, and one you won’t want to miss.

Mammy’s Kitchen and Bar

Delicious country style foods served in a southern cabin themed restaurant. Mammy’s Kitchen and Bar has the best pinto beans and corn bread other than your grandma’s house.

Cafe Primo

Cafe Primo is an Italian restaurant that sits right downtown among many shops and restaurants. We indulged in their homemade bread and a pizza. They have dine-in and outdoor seating.

Pat’s Place

If you’re looking for a breakfast/brunch spot on a Sunday then Pat’s Place is where you should be. Open throughout the week but only serving breakfast all day on Sundays. Get the Pancakes and an omelet – you won’t be disappointed!
