If you find yourself in the Lexington, Kentucky area and in need of sustenance, you will find a plethora of great local restaurants. As someone who lived in the area for several years, I can say without a doubt that these are the best places to find good eats. I have compiled a list of my favorite places and what I like to eat at each location to make your choice of what to eat a little easier. What will you choose? Check out some of the best restaurants in Lexington.

Breakfast/Brunch

Doodles

This old gas station turned charming diner is serving up some great eats. The Pigs n’ Puffs are my favorite. It’s four fluffy beignets, bacon, and fruit, making it the perfect savory sweet breakfast combo. Enjoy your meal al fresco or dine inside and take in all the heavenly smells of food being cooked right in front of you. Doodles is open Tuesday- Sunday 8am-2pm (closed Mondays). This is definitely one of the best restaurants in Lexington, I make sure I get my beignets every time I visit.

Josie’s

A good ole country diner that always serves with a smile. Josie’s is your typical country diner food but the one thing that keeps me coming back are the jalapeno cheese grits. You can thank me later. Serving breakfast and lunch everyday from 8am-2pm.

DV8 Kitchen

This quaint little café has a full breakfast and lunch menu. On a nice day sit in the lovely outdoor seating area as you devour a giant cinnamon roll. I love DV8 Kitchen because it serves as a second chance employment opportunity for those who find it difficult to find jobs. Always support the local businesses that are supporting the community. They’re ready to serve you Monday-Friday 7am-2pm, and Saturday/Sunday 8am-3pm.

Frank’s Donuts

Looking for the best donuts to satisfy that sweet tooth? Look no further than Frank’s. With the convenience of a drive-thru window, you don’t even have to get out of the car. Perfect for that morning rush. The soft, buttery donuts are crave worthy, so get a dozen because one just isn’t enough.

Lunch/Dinner

Zim’s Café

In the middle of downtown Lexington you’ll find a hidden gem in the old courthouse, Zim’s Cafe. A lovely café with a convenient location and delicious food options. Take home some of their baked sweet treats or some local goods from the café shop. This restaurant is a sister to Windy Corner Market, which is also owned by local chef Outia Michael. Some of the best restaurants in Lexington are associated with Chef Michael’s.

Windy Corner Market

You can get any meal here and no matter what you choose it will be amazing. Chef Ouita is well known in the area for owning more than a few restaurants, Windy Corner Market included. This is the best restaurant in Lexington with a view. This Café style restaurant is located in the middle of horse country so you can enjoy a beautiful view of rolling pastures while you chow down on some delicious eats. Don’t miss Friday nights when the chef does a fish special and there’s live music.

Apollo’s Pizza

This was a go to spot when I was in college. The pizza is extra cheesy and the atmosphere is very retro with a hip vibe. I highly recommend the cheesy garlic sticks which are very addictive. If you have a large group go for the wagon wheel pizza. It’s the size of a wagon wheel, and not the ones your kids ride in. I’m talking about horse and buggy wagons. Apollo’s Pizza is my go to for that extra cheesy craving we all get.

Dad’s Favorites

This local lunch favorite is a great place to grab a quick bite. Their sandwiches and soups are perfect for a fall day. Dad’s Favorites doesn’t need much embellishment, try anything and be satisfied.

Local Taco

This is a quaint, buzzing restaurant located in the heart of downtown, making it a very popular place to visit. Its casual, youthful vibe is matched by the speed at which you get your food. Get as many tacos as you like and make at least one of them a southern fried chicken, because it’s the best. The chips and queso are also a must. There are two locations in the Lexington area, so drop in and grab a bite.

Winchell’s

A local sports bar/diner atmosphere that has a variety of food options to satisfy anyone. I love the tomato basil soup and the ham and swiss sandwich, but you can’t go wrong with any of their sandwiches. Don’t forget to get a slice of pie before you leave! Winchell’s has a wide variety of foods so everyone can get something completely different. Keep in mind that some of the best restaurants in Lexington will be buzzing when there’s a University of Kentucky game happening.

Wood fired pizza from Pearl's in Lexington, KY.

Pearl’s

Pearl’s is a retro restaurant where you can find some of the best wood-fired pizza Lexington has to offer. Take the stress out of choosing what to get by letting the chef pick by ordering the Pearl’s Pick, which was the best choice I have ever made. I almost ate the entire pizza by myself. It was so exquisite, I would love to have it multiple times a week. They also have wood fired bagels for breakfast. Check their hours to make sure you go for a bagel and then back again for pizza. They offer vegan options so don’t worry about not being able to find something for your dietary needs.

J. Render’s

A local bbq joint that serves up some mouth-watering meats. I love their Oh No You Didn’t sandwich which is mac n cheese on shredded pork between two slices of toasted bread, yum! The onion rings are a great side with anything. J. Render’s BBQ is tucked away so you may not find it on your own, but once you do you’ll never forget.

Red State BBQ

I love a good hole in the wall place because looks can be deceiving and oh is that true for Red State BBQ. Located on the outskirts of Lexington this tiny place packs a load of flavor in their meats. I love getting the shredded pork by the pound and eating on it for days in different ways.

Palmer’s Fresh Grill

Tucked away in a small shopping center, Palmer’s is a little oasis with its fountains, and if you’re lucky some live music. Take in the ambiance as you relax from a day of shopping while enjoying a delectable meal. Palmer’s Fresh Grill is a great place to bring anyone, friends, family, and dates alike.

El Cid

A cozy retro style restaurant serving up some authentic Mexican cuisine situated in downtown Lexington. El Cid’s Barbacoa queso tacos are dripping with flavor. Pair that with perfectly seasoned black beans and you’ve got a meal worth talking about. Take pictures with their fun murals outside.

Plate of bbq shredded pork, sticky rice with sauce, and pasta salad.

Big Kahuna Hawaiian BBQ

Most bbq joints have the same meats and sides to offer, it’s all about who can do it better. Big Kahuna Hawaiian BBQ does things a little differently. They offer a great Hawaiian twist on the classic bbq flavors we know and love, to spice things up a bit. Try anything off their menu to get an explosion of flavor. My favorite is their sticky rice that they dress up in sauces that will have your taste buds singing “Over the Rainbow.” Their plates are easily shareable at a fantastic price you can’t beat.

Sawyer’s Downtown

A staple in the downtown Lexington area for many years, Sawyer’s is a great place to get a quick bite before heading out for the day or going to a show. They provide quick, friendly service without sacrificing taste. Pop in for a burger or some chili on your next visit.

Nic and Norman’s

Nic and Norman’s is an upscale casual restaurant and a great place to hang with friends or a date. Owned by the famous Norman Reedus and Greg Nicotero of the Walking Dead series. Right in the heart of downtown Lexington, you can get gourmet-level food at prices that won’t break the bank. The fries are chunky potato curls with just the right amount of crunch, and how could you resist a peach cobbler that looks that good?

Kentucky Native Cafe

A hidden oasis among the city is Kentucky Native Cafe. Find sweet serenity among the plants and trees as you dine on healthy dishes made from fresh produce. If you have friends or family that have dietary restrictions this is the best restaurant in Lexington with several options that will satisfy anyone. Their menu changes daily since they are using fresh ingredients, so call ahead if you like knowing before you go. Leave room for dessert because Kentucky Native Cafe also partners with another locally owned business Sorella’s Gelateria, which you can read about in the desserts section below.

Hola Havana Cuban Cuisine

I never imagined I would find an amazing authentic Cuban restaurant in Lexington, Kentucky but I certainly did at Hola Havana Cuban Cuisine. I’m a sucker for a good Cuban sandwich and sweet plantains so I was very excited to find it so close to home. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to top off such a great meal with some chocolate stuffed churros as well. The staff at Hola Havana are very friendly and made sure we wanted for nothing. The murals on the brightly colored walls made me feel as if I’d stepped into little Havana for a moment. This is a restaurant I will definitely be revisiting in the future.

Desserts

Crank and Boom

A charming ice cream shop located in the distillery district, Crank and Boom has some very unique flavors of hand scooped ice cream, along with all the classics. My favorite flavor is cookies and crème because they soak the cookies in the milk before making it, yum!

Evan’s Orchard

Looking for a sweet treat in the fall? Evan’s Orchard has you covered. Go grab a caramel apple, fried apple pie a la mode, or any one of their other amazing treats. A short drive from downtown Lexington and close to the Kentucky Horse Park, it’s a hidden gem. Pick a pumpkin or some apples. Take pictures in the fields of sunflowers. Enjoy a hayride through the orchard. This is a great place to take the kids to blow off some energy with a large play area that’s sure to wear them out. Don’t go home without a tasty treat from the gift shop.

Cup of gelato from Sorella's Gelateria in Lexington, KY.

Sorella’s Gelateria

Sorella’s Gelateria is a small, locally owned business by two Italian sisters, as you might have guessed since Sorella is Italian for sister. I had the privilege of meeting one of them and what a delight she was. You can see how much they care about their product by the fresh flavors they offer. It was strawberry season when I first visited and they had strawberry sorbet that was so refreshing and light. I tried my three flavors and got a little of each because it was too hard to choose just one. Some of the best restaurants in Lexington are partnering with other businesses and using locally sourced produce. It’s so important to support local that’s supporting local.

Missy’s Pies

Missy’s Pies is a cute little pie shop if you’re in the mood for pie and don’t want to go to a restaurant, stop in and grab a slice or two, or a whole pie! My favorite thing to do is to grab a few slices of differing pies and eat on them throughout the week.
