Be a Tourist Without the Travel

Play the tourist in your own city or state. Sometimes we get so involved in our daily lives and think that we have to travel far away to experience anything new or exciting that we forget that history is all around us, and each place has something to offer. Just recently I came to this realization and played the tourist in my own city, I found so much to do that I was ashamed that I never took advantage of it before.

Take a Minute

Slowing down doesn’t seem to be in the American vocabulary anymore. We get so caught up in the hustle and bustle that we forget to enjoy the things around us. My new philosophy when I go anywhere is “take a moment to experience the moment”, what I mean by that is to really allow yourself to be enveloped in the experience so that it fills you up and stays with you. After all what’s the point of going somewhere to relax if you just rush through it? Have you ever been on “vacation” and felt more tired after you got back than when you left? If yes, it’s because we rush through it with our checklists and itineraries but we forget to make time for relaxation. I’m all for a good plan but you have to make time to create the experience you want.

Some people enjoy jumping from one thing to the next and others enjoy the stillness of being in one place. No matter your preferences you can always find a way to have the vacation you want. Vacationing close to home can be fun, enlightening, and it won’t hurt the budget as much as a longer trip would. Wouldn’t you rather go on a few short trips a year as opposed to one long one? I know I have enjoyed discovering what my home state of Kentucky has to offer in its natural beauty and deep history. Each state has something unique or significant that everyone should enjoy at least once in their life, it’s up to you if you’re willing to find it.
